Dr. Gatell On Wisdom Of the Great Thinkers !
This web page is devoted to some the greatest thoughts I have collected of our times, or contributions made by friends (and patients) on the Internet.

400 B.C. - "He who is going to truly acquire an understanding of medicine must enjoy natural ability, teaching, a suitable place,... diligence, and time. - Hippocrates - The Father of Medicine.
The Hippocratic Oath: "I swear by Apollo the Physician and Asclepius and Hygeia and Panaceia and all the gods and goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will fulfill according to my ability and judgment this oath and this covenant: To hold him who has taught me this art as equal to my parent and to live my life in partnership with him, and if he is in need of money to give him a share of mine, and to regard his offspring as equal to my brothers in male lineage and to teach them this art--if they desire to learn it--without fee and covenant; to give share of precepts and oral instruction and all other learning to my sons and to the sons of him who has instructed me and to pupils who have signed the covenant and have taken an oath according to the medical law, but to no one else. I will apply dietetic measure for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice. I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and in holiness I will guard my life and my art. I will not use the knife, not even on sufferers from stone, but will withdraw in favor of such men as are engaged in this work. Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice, of all mischief and in particular of sexual relations with both female and male persons, be they free or slaves. What I may see or hear in the course of the treatment or even outside of the treatment in regard to the life of men, which on no account one must spread abroad, I will keep to myself holding such things shameful to be spoken about. If I fulfill this oath and do not violate it, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and art, being honored with fame among all men for all time to come; if I transgress it and swear falsely, may the opposite be my lot." --Translated by Ludwig Edelstein

I do not like to impose my Religious or Political beliefs on anyone, but I would like to share with you that I do believe that the greatest influence of our time came from one Divine Man, the Son of God, who was born almost 2000 years ago. His name was Jesus Christ. His Birthday is how most of the World (Christians and Non-Christians) have set the modern daily calendar that we follow on a day to day basis. And, the one most important thing He left us was how we must pray to Our God:
"Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be be they name, Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen."
"Everyone should have some form of Spirituality to reach their Higher Well-Being in order to have a happier and healthier life - This fact has been known for centuries and has recently been proven the American Medical Association (AMA). Man needs to pray and have some form of Religion in order to live together and survive the stress of our modern times. Try praying sometime, it is believed to increase your brain's seratonin levels and therefore may help chronic pain sufferers without added anti-depressant medications - try it, you may like it.
So, I always encourage my patients to have Hope and to find their Spirituality as one part of my Holistic Approach to Pain Management !" - John A. Gatell, MD - Friday July 16, 1999.

SYMPTOMS OF INNER PEACE
Be on the lookout for symptoms of inner peace. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to inner peace and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world.SOME SIGNS TO LOOK FOR:
1) A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.
2) An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.
3) A loss of interest in judging other people.
4) A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.
5) A loss of interest in conflict.
6) A loss of the ability to worry. (This is a very serious symptom.)
5) Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation.
6) Contented feelings of connected-ness with others and nature.
7) Frequent attacks of smiling.
8) An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.
9) An increased susceptibility to the love offered by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.

NOTE: Ms. Susan has been contributing much to my knowledge in chronic pain by sending me excellent information she finds on the Net. I feel that her graciousness, kindness and need to help others comes out in her "wonderful" friend's words.
Ms. Susan, you are very wonderfully special to me and my patients !

IF
If I had but one wish
what would it would be?
Would my wish for my neighbor
or would I think of only me?
If I saw a needy friend and
he needed me today,
would I stop to help him
or turn and look away?
If I could make a difference
in a child's point of view,
would I give them my time
or what would I do?
If my sister is struggling
with a burden she can't bare,
will I share the load with her
and show her I care?
If my brother was hurting
suffering with terrible pain,
would I use my gift of healing
or let him suffer in vain?
So I fell to my knees and
ask Lord, what should I do?
Then I heard the answer
love all as I have loved you

It is only a tiny rose bud a flower of
Gods design;
But I Cannot unfold the petals with
these clumsy hands of mine.
The secret of un folding flower is
not known to such as I.
The flower God opens so sweetly
in my hands would fade and die.
If I cannot unfold a rosebud
This flower of God's design,
Then how can I think I have wisdom
to unfold this life of mine?
So I'll trust in Him For His
Leading each moment of every day,
and I'll look to him for His guidance
each step of the pilgrim way.
For the pathway that lies before
My Heavenly Father knows
I'll trust Him to unfold the moments
just as he unfold the rose.
